Write now #3

Today’s prompt is inspired by “Packing for the Future: Instructions,” a poem by Lorna Crozier.

Options for how to use this prompt:

  • Use the title of the poem “Packing for the Future” as your prompt. Then write instructions to yourself or to a loved one on how to pack for the immediate (2026) or the distant future.

OR

  • Read the entire poem, and then use a word, phrase, or line from it as your prompt. Go where it takes you.

Write as fast as you can, as long as you want, but for at least 10 minutes.

TIPS for making your story more “yours”:

  • Mind-map any images—sights, sounds, textures, tastes, smells, and/or an event/turning point—that come to mind as you think about the title (or the entire poem, if you chose to read it). When you feel a “tug,” begin writing. Look and listen for anything that might be hiding…and let it emerge.

  • Instead of using Crozier’s title as the title of your piece, find a word or phrase or feeling in what you wrote that can be worked into a title. If it makes sense to do so, attribute the inspiration for you piece by adding “—After Lorna Crozier’s ‘Packing for the Future’” or “—Inspired by Lorna Crozier’s ‘Packing for the Future’” beneath your title.
